White Dutch Clover Seed
Back

White Dutch Clover Seed is a perennial strain of white clover. White Dutch Clover is used for lawns, ground cover, erosion control, cover crop, and in pasture mixtures. White Dutch Clover usually matures between 4 to 8 in.

Many homeowners include White Dutch Clover in their lawn seed mixture because clover sprouts fast, and grows so dependably, that it's a valuable aid in getting a new lawn started. Nodules on the roots fix nitrogen from the air. Actually, up to 1/3 the nitrogen your lawn needs can be obtained from White Dutch Clover! It grows vigorously even in poor clay subsoil around new home construction. If you want all the benefits of a cover crop, but don't want to till early or mow, clover is your best bet. The seed will withstand moderate drought conditions, and grow well, even on barren soil where nothing else wants to grow. It is winter-hardy and it stays so low you can just till it under during spring if you are using it for a cover crop.

One of the most popular reasons for establishing White Dutch Clover as an alternative lawn variety is because of the relative lack of water required compared to a standard grass lawn. White Dutch Clover requires less maintenance in general, and can also grow strongly in shade areas of your yard. The one downside to White Dutch Clover as a lawn source is its propensity for white flowers (which give this clover its name). For a more pure "green" clover lawn, without flowers, consider Hancock's Micro Clover Seed. Of course, some may actually prefer the white flowers of White Dutch Clover, especially those looking to promote bee culture.

Clover lawns also have benefits for dog lovers, as traditional grass lawns can begin to show discoloration due to the acidity of dog urine. Clover maintains its color better under these circumstances. On the flip side, clover itself has a more dramatic impact on clothing. Those with children may want to avoid alternative clover lawns as they will stain more dramatically than traditional grass lawns.

White clover originated in Europe and Central Asia, and it is of course most famous for its presence in Ireland and across the United Kingdom. It was introduced to regions such as the United States and New Zealand because of its strength as a source of forage in temperate regions. It remains one of the most popular form of animal forage to this day. This applies to both livestock and as a source of food plot stock. Deer love White Dutch Clover!

Coated Seed vs Raw Seed

Coated seed contains a clay-based surrounding shell that increases moisture retention and helps to reduce insect or fowl consumption. Coated seed contains approximately 50% coating weight, or inert weight, per pound of seed. Coated White Dutch Clover Seed is also easier to see after it is applied. Raw seed features no fillers, coatings, or treatments.

Rave Reviews

It's no secret why Hancock's White Dutch Clover Seed is so popular. The answer is "because it works"! Here are a few of our favorite reviews from clients who have planted Hancock's White Dutch Clover Seed:

"I was having a really hard time getting one patch of my lawn to grow without a lot of added nutrients via spray, with the exception being one 2'x2' patch that was wild dutch clover," writes Jon. "I know my resident bunnies loved it, so I plated the entire area in dutch clover. I over seeded a bit, because I tilled it and started over to help negate some of the weeds coming back. Within 10 weeks it was full grown and beautiful. it took about 1 week to germinate and sprout. Nice thick clover. It does not flower as fast as the "native" clover, but it is amazing cover. It grows to about 7" tall and gives the bunnies pretty good cover. I will often just see ears sticking up and moving around. The baby squirrels and chipmunks chase each other in it a lot, too. Not only that, the birds (thrushs, robins, doves and house sparrows love to get in there and peck at the sand that was tilled up and the bugs. Over all, I am going to keep slowly converting my lawn to dutch clover. It is primarily planted where it gets partial sun for about 5 hrs of the day and a solid 3 hrs of direct sun. The area where it is mainly shaded grows just the same as the full and partial sun."

"I live in New England, and have had difficulty getting a nice lawn established," says Rob H. "I live in a shady area, with sandy soil along a river bank. I put down some fescue in the fall, followed by the dutch white in the spring. This stuff has taken off, and the grass it between is green and lush. It has done extremely well in deep shade (way better than so called "deep shade grass"). It stays green without watering. I think this fall I'm going to fully commit to make my entire lawn clover. It's that good. I've been preaching the merits of a clover lawn to all my friends."

White Dutch Clover Seed

White Dutch Clover Seed White Dutch Clover Seed
White Dutch Clover is one of the few varieties that is perhaps most helpful to homeowners, versus farmers, ranchers, and hunters. This clover serves as an excellent starter and cover crop for soil that simply doesn't want to grow anything else...especially around recent constructed homes.
