Seed FAQs
What is the difference between coated and raw seed?
For grasses, the coated seed has a clay-based coating around the seed that aids in moisture retention for germination. Birds tend not to eat the coated seed, and it is easier to see where the seed has been spread. The coating takes up some weight of the bag however, which means less seed per lb., but you are getting the added benefit of the coating. The raw seed is just how it sounds—not coated or mixed with anything.
For legumes, the seed is coated in the inoculant or "pre-inoculated." An inoculant is a type of nitrogen-fixing bacteria for legumes that allows the plant to convert atmospheric nitrogen into ammonia nitrogen, a form usable by the plant.
What is the difference between Argentine and Pensacola Bahia?
Argentine Bahia is commonly used for lawns due to its appealing appearance. The Argentine Bahia has wide, dark green blades and has fewer seed heads than Pensacola Bahia. The Pensacola Bahia is typically used on roadsides and pastures because it is cost effective and tends to grow better in sandier soils. Pensacola Bahia has a thinner blade and is a prolific seed head producer once established.
What is the difference between hulled and unhulled seed?
Naturally, Bermuda seed has an outer casing around the seed. Unhulled Bermuda seed has this outer casing left on, which gives it an extra layer of protection but extends the germination time. Hulled Bermuda seeds have this outer casing removed, which helps the seed germinate quicker but gives it less protection. Unhulled Bermuda is typically used when the planting conditions are not optimal (i.e. no irrigation, poorer soil, etc.). Hulled Bermuda seeds need adequate water for germination and plenty of nutrients in the soil.
If I order plugs, when will they ship?
Our lawn plugs ship on Monday if your order is placed by the previous Friday at 11 am EST. Any order that is placed after 11am EST on Friday, will be shipped a week from the following Monday.
How long can I store grass seed before it goes bad or expire?
Seed doesn’t “go bad” like milk does but it will lose its germination potential the longer that it is stored. We recommend purchasing the seed during the season that you are planting it but if you have any extra seed, you can store it in a cool, dry location for approximately one year.
What spreader setting should I use?
There is not a list of spreader settings that apply to all different brands of spreaders. You can utilize the seed setting chart that came with your spreader as a basic guide, and adjust accordingly. Most spreaders have setting charts online by spreader model if you do not have the paperwork with your spreader.
