In coastal regions, life is filled with sun, fun, and salt air. While these elements can make for a great weekend, they are often too much for some grass varieties to take. With high heat, humidity, and salt levels in the southeast and other coastal areas, it is often a challenge to produce lawns that are healthy, beautiful and resilient. Because of the abundance of large oak, willow, and other shade trees, finding a grass variety that thrives in sun and tolerates moderate shade is yet another problem. Palmetto St. Augustine is so versatile it overcomes these and other elements Mother Nature throws its way.
With a striking medium, emerald-green color, and a softer texture than other St. Augustine varieties, Palmetto gives good Fall color retention. Come Spring, you'll find Palmetto ready to green up quickly after its winter rest.
Developed in Florida, Palmetto is a favorite in coastal and island areas, and is rapidly being positioned as the landscaping standard, having proven itself repeatedly since 1994. Palmetto prefers heat, but will handle cold better than other types of St. Augustine. A hardy performer in both full sun and partial shade, Palmetto offers an extremely dense root system and natural resistance to chinch bugs?qualities that allow it to fair well in drought conditions and to remain greener longer throughout the year.
It has a vigorous and aggressive growth habit, and softer texture than other St. Augustine grasses. It also has both good salt and drought tolerance.

Determine the square footage your area by measuring length x width (ex. 10x10 = 100 sq. ft.)
One order contains 36 3 in. x 3 in. grass plugs. This will cover 64 sq. ft. at 12 in. spacing (15 in. center-to-center), 80 sq. ft. at 15 in. spacing (18 in. center-to-center), or 112 sq. ft. at 18 in. spacing (21 in. center-to-center). However, spacing should be 12 in. edge-to-edge for best results. Divide the total square footage by 64, 80, or 112 sq. ft. to determine the number of orders you will need.
Mow at a height of 2 to 3 in. with a rotary mower, and only water if it shows signs of wilting.
Additional Information for Fall & Winter:
Winter performance of the Sod Pods will depend on the grass variety. St. Augustine is a warm season grass and has the least cold tolerance. Sustained extreme cold temperatures, such as below 25 degrees, can seriously damage or kill St. Augustine. Sustained would mean periods of freezing temperatures that last more than 6 to 8 hours. This is generally not an issue in the southern half of states in the Gulf Coast and Southeast. In the event that a sustained hard freeze is predicted, it would be beneficial to water the St Augustine right before the freeze takes place. This is because the water acts as an insulation because moist soil does not get as cold as dry soil.
Zoysia and Bermuda are much more cold tolerant than St. Augustine. These grasses go dormant in the winter which protects their new growth from freezing. Temperature should not be an issue for Zoysia and Bermuda anywhere in the Southeast or Atlantic Coast of the US. However, because these grasses go dormant in the winter, it is important not to overwater. With shorter and cooler days in the late fall and winter, over watering can expose the grass to fungus and other diseases.
In summary, Sod Plugs can be planted throughout the Fall and Winter, but it is important to keep an eye out for any predicted hard and sustained freeze. Be careful to not overwater, unless watering specifically to act as an insulator prior to a freeze.
