Hancock's Pensacola Bahia Spring & Summer Grass Seed Mix
Back

Our Pensacola Bahia Grass Seed mixture is used for lawn and pasture applications in the southern climates. Pensacola Bahia is commonly used for lawns, pastures and roadside applications from North Carolina to California. It is excellent for sandy soils that many other grasses struggle to survive. Our Pensacola Bahia is harvested, processed and distributed from Hancock Farm and Seed Company insuring the highest quality Pensacola Bahiagrass seed available.

Product Information

  • Application or Use: Lawn, Pasture, Ground Cover, Livestock Grazing, Cover Crop, Erosion Control
  • Germination Time: Brown Top Millet - 5 - 7 days; Pensacola Bahia - 21 - 30 days, under optimal conditions
  • Growing Locations: Warm Season Zone, Transition Zone
  • Height: Lawn - 3 - 5 inches or Pasture - 8 - 20 inches (It is very important to keep the newly seeded areas watered and mowed to prevent the Brown Top Millet from overcrowding or shading out the young Pensacola Bahia seedlings.)
  • Sunlight Requirements: 8+ hours, full sun for best results
  • Tolerance: Drought tolerance, and exceptional insect and disease resistance; moderate tolerance to sandy soils.
  • When to Plant: Recommended planting time is spring and summer when night time temperatures are consistently 65+ degrees and 3 months prior to first frost.

Note: Pensacola Bahiagrass is not recommended in high quality lawn applications due to prolific summer seed sprout production. For high quality bahia grass lawn applications we recommend our Argentine Bahia grass seed mixture.

Pensacola Bahia grass is commonly used for lawn and pasture applications across the Southern United States including Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, North East Texas, and South West California. For more information on how well Pensacola Bahiagrass grows in your exact location please call or contact us.

Pensacola Bahiagrass is grown, harvested and processed by Hancock Farm & Seed Co., Inc.

Pensacola Bahiagrass Mix - Spring & Summer Mix

    Pensacola Bahiagrass (Coated)

    Browntop Millet

This mix is shipped March 1 through September 30th, unless otherwise requested.

Our Spring & Summer Pensacola grass seed mixture contains Coated Pensacola Bahiagrass and Browntop Millet. The Browntop Millet is added to assist in fast ground coverage, retaining soil moisture and preventing soil and seed erosion. The Browntop Millet will also quickly establish an effective germination environment for the permanent Pensacola Bahiagrass. The Browntop Millet will germinate in 5 to 7 days with adequate soil moisture and grow for approximately 65 days. During the Browntop millet’s 65 day growing cycle the permanent Pensacola Bahiagrass will establish beneath the protective Browntop Millet’s coverage. It is very important to keep the newly seeded areas watered and mowed to prevent the Browntop Millet from overcrowding or shading out the young Pensacola Bahiagrass seedlings. To insure a successful seeding and establishment experience please refer closely to the planting guide provided with your order.

    Coated Seed vs Raw Seed
Coated seed contains a clay-based surrounding shell that increases moisture retention and helps to reduce insect or fowl consumption. Coated seed contains approximately 50% coating weight, or inert weight, per pound of seed.. Raw seed features no fillers, coatings, or treatments.

    Soil Prep

    • When choosing to start a new lawn, remove old vegetation by using a de-thatcher, power rake or tiller to kill the existing vegetation. Rake or drag the area to remove debris and dead grass for a clean area. Ensure the soil is leveled and loosened to allow the seed to have good soil contact once spread on a clean seed bed.
      • If you have an area with heavy weed coverage, we recommend starting fresh by killing and removing the existing vegetation. If you choose to use chemicals, herbicides or fertilizers, you must check with the product’s manufacturer prior to planting new seed to ensure the proper waiting period.
    • When overseeding an existing area, mow your lawn at the lowest setting and bag the clippings. Rake or drag any areas that have dead thatch or debris.

    Seeding

    • Seeding Rate: 2 - 3 lbs. per 1,000 sq. ft. or 100-150 lbs. per acre
    • Overseeding Rate: 1 - 2 lbs. per 1,000 sq. ft. or 50 - 100 lbs. per acre
    • Spread at the recommended rate based on total area and whether it is bare ground or pre-existing vegetation.
    • Spreader Settings: There is not any one setting that applies for all brands of spreaders. We recommend reviewing the seed settings chart that came with your spreader or contact the manufacturer directly. Ensure you are choosing a seed on the list by the manufacturer that closely resembles the seed you are choosing to plant.
      • If you have any concerns on what setting you should use, we recommend always starting with the smallest option then adjusting it to match the recommended seeding rate.

    Fertilizer

    • Grass like all living things need food to survive. Food for grasses is fertilizer. We recommend fertilizing every 3 - 4 months with Hancock's 16-04-08 Lawn & Pasture Fertilizer. Our 16-04-08 Lawn and Pasture Fertilizer is custom blended to provide a slow-releasing, water-activated economical fertilizer. Hancock's 16-04-08 Lawn & Pasture Fertilizer can be applied at a rate of 5 lbs. per 1,000 sq. ft. or 250 lbs. per acre. The most probable cause of a declining lawn or pasture is poor nutrition. If you have any concerns about your soil, we recommend getting your soil tested to determine what nutrients you are low in as well as your pH. The results of the soil testing will give you the best information to amend your soil for the best grass growth.

    Watering Schedule

    • For best results, water your lawn each morning and evening for 30 minutes based on weather conditions, until the new seedlings have reached the height of 3 - 5 inches for lawns or 8 - 20 inches for pasture.
    • Once they have reached that height, water 3 times per week as needed.
    • For best results, keep the soil moist while not over-watering the area or creating puddles.

    Germination Time

    • Brown Top Millet - 5 - 7 days, under optimal conditions
    • Pensacola Bahia - 21 - 30 days, under optimal conditions

    Mowing Requirements

    • Lawns: Mow at 3 - 5 inches regularly.
    • Pastures: Mow or allow grazing to keep pastures maintained at 8-20 inches.
    • It is very important to keep the newly seeded areas watered and mowed at 3 - 5 inches to prevent the Brown Top Millet from overcrowding or shading out the Pensacola Bahia seedlings.

      Satisfied

Not my first time to order from Hancock. That said the orders are always shipped correctly and promptly. Additionally they maintain a good stock of many seeds. IF only they could also send rain with the order!

      Quality seed!

We started by leveling the ground with a few yards of dirt, then we came to your company and got our fertilizer and seed. We followed your directions and watered twice a day. In 4 days we had some seed coming up by day six we had all kinds of grass and now 3 weeks later you can hardly tell the difference from the rest of our grass. We love it and have reccomended it to several neighbors.

      Awesome seed

Within 2 weeks the seed germinated and filled in the 1000 Sq ft bare spot in my side yard. I prepped the soil with lawn soil and added quality top soil to the scattered seed to cover it. Very satisfied, best Bahia seed I've ever bought. Will definitely be ordering more.
