Characteristics

Hancock's Bentgrass Seed makes it the elite option for fairways, greens, and tee-boxes. Hancock's Bentgrass Seed is known for its extreme disease resistance - ultimately resulting in less fungicide treatments and maintenance.

Hancock's Bentgrass Seed offers a superior turf quality that offers strong performance on fairways, greens and tee-boxes. Its resistance to fungal issues means less maintenance and money spent on fungicide in the long run.

This new and improved variety is well adapted to any U.S. and overseas areas where Creeping Bentgrass is utilized for golf course greens, tees and fairways. Hancock's Bentgrass Seed is recommended for seeding or sodding golf course putting greens, tees, new and renovated fairways, as well as overseeding conversions on greens planted to older, poor performing varieties that need to be updated. In addition, it is perfect for the lawn enthusiast trying to achieve a golf course green look!

Hancock's Bentgrass Seed is known for its high performance all year-round! It is the perfect choice for all levels of golf course projects, especially those with stressful environments, offering superior turf quality, excellent winter color, and uniform, moderate dense growth habit. Hancock's Bentgrass Seed has improved drought tolerance along with exceptional insect, disease, dollar spot weed, and brown patch resistance, which aids in reduction of fungicide usage.

Soil Prep

  • When choosing to seed a clean seedbed, remove old vegetation by using a de-thatcher, power rake or tiller to kill the existing vegetation. Rake or drag the area to remove debris and dead grass for a clean area. Ensure the soil is leveled and loosened to allow the seed to have good soil contact once spread on a clean seed bed.
    • If you have an area with heavy weed coverage, we recommend starting fresh by killing and removing the existing vegetation. If you choose to use chemicals, herbicides or fertilizers, you must check with the product’s manufacturer prior to planting new seed to ensure the proper waiting period.
  • When overseeding an existing area, mow the area at the lowest setting and bag the clippings. Rake or drag any areas that have dead thatch or debris.

Seeding

  • Seeding Rate: 2 - 3 lbs. per 1,000 sq. ft.
  • Seeding Rate: 100 - 150 lbs. per acre
  • Overseeding Rate: 1 - 1.5 lbs. per 1,000 sq. ft.
  • Overseeding Rate: 50 - 75 lbs. per acre
  • Spread at the recommended rate based on total area and whether it is bare ground or pre-existing vegetation.
  • Spreader Settings: There is not any one setting that applies for all brands of spreaders. We recommend reviewing the seed settings chart that came with your spreader or contact the manufacturer directly. Ensure you are choosing a seed on the list by the manufacturer that closely resembles the seed you are choosing to plant.
    • If you have any concerns on what setting you should use, we recommend always starting with the smallest option then adjusting it to match the recommended seeding rate.

Fertilizer

  • Grass like all living things need food to survive. Food for grasses is fertilizer. We recommend fertilizing every 3 - 4 months with Hancock's 16-04-08 Lawn & Pasture Fertilizer. Our 16-04-08 Lawn and Pasture Fertilizer is custom blended to provide a slow-releasing, water-activated economical fertilizer. Hancock's 16-04-08 Lawn & Pasture Fertilizer can be applied at a rate of 5 lbs. per 1,000 sq. ft. or 250 lbs. per acre. The most probable cause of a declining lawn or pasture is poor nutrition. If you have any concerns about your soil, we recommend getting your soil tested to determine what nutrients you are low in as well as your pH. The results of the soil testing will give you the best information to amend your soil for the best grass growth.

Watering Schedule

  • For best results, water your lawn each morning and evening for 30 minutes based on weather conditions, until the new seedlings have established a route system and reached the optimal height.
  • Once they have reached the optimal height, water 3 times per week as needed.
  • For best results, keep the soil moist while not over-watering the area or creating puddles.

Germination Time

  • 3 - 5 days (6 - 10 days in cooler weather), under optimal conditions

Mowing Requirements

  • Hancock's Bentgrass Seed is typically maintained at a height of less than 1/4 inch.
  • First mowing: approximately 21 days, depending on usage.

Ultimate Lawn

Good, our lawn is mostly blue grass and weeds. Wanted something that would choke out the weeds and be functional without chemicals. So this spring started inter-seeding the bare spots with creeping bent grass. Will see how the experiment turns out. Hancock had the best deal.

Good seed for southern lawns

The grass I bought is good, fine, grass that sprouted well. It looks like it will develop into a nice dense lawn.

Disappointed

Hello - I planted 3-4 pounds of your bentgrass seed just over a month ago. It took nearly two weeks to germinate and has generally come out very slowly and sporadically. Some spots are pretty good but just as many are sparse or have little or no growth at all. And this is despite the weather here in Long island, NY being unseasonably warm nearly the whole time since I planted the grass. It’s gotten plenty of water, as well. At the same time period, I planted a couple of pounds of Penncross bentgrass seed from another supplier in a different part of my lawn - but with nearly equal amounts of sunlight and water - and that grass has filled in quite nicely. Regards, Mark Costello
