Product Information
Champion GQ is a three way blend of endophyte-enhanced perennial ryegrasses: 34.18% Zoom, 33.89% Monsieur, 31.09% Karma. These varieties are subject to change due to availability.

Champion GQ Perennial Ryegrass Seed was developed with an emphasis on selection based on qualities turf professionals have told us are most important: rapid establishment, stress and disease resistance, and rapid recovery. Champion GQ is composed of the SR 4000 series and other exceptional varieties of perennial ryegrasses adapted for your specific region. Champion GQ offers rapid establishment, stress and disease resistance as well as rapid recovery.  This variety is primarily used for Golf Courses, sports fields, parks, schools and commercial landscaping.  Note that GQ is only to be used for fall/winter overseeding in the Warm Climate Zone not in the spring and that the seed will function as an annual not a perennial due to warmer seasons.

Champion GQ has excellent resistance to common turf diseases including: Crown Rust, Grey Leaf Spot, Winter Netblotch, Large Brown Patch, Leaf Sport, Red Thread and good resistance to Stem Rust.
Since the initial outbreak in the mid-1990’s, Seed Research has been feverishly working to develop varieties that can withstand the ravages of Gray Leaf Spot (GLS). The initial GLS screening cycle has yielded varieties that are significantly more resistant to GLS than has ever been seen before — SR 4220, SR 4350, SR 4420, SR 4500 and SR 4550. The addition of SR 4600 adds the highest level of GLS resistance. All succeeding generations of our perennial ryegrasses will go through this grueling screening process before they are approved for blending in CHAMPION GQ.

This perennial ryegrass offers high levels of viable endophyte providing resistance to billbugs, sod webworms, chinch bugs, armyworms, and aphids.

Champion rye is the way to go

Just bought a new construction home and had zoysia sod put down in front. We didn’t have anything in the back but a mess. I planted the champion rye and bam instant green nice looking lawn.

Champion GQ - full lawn renovation 2021 - spring 2022

Great seed. Great color. Incredibly fast germination time. Great striping. I installed a completely new front and back yard in fall of 2021 (about 6000 sf). Now it's spring 2022 - even though our spring weather has been historically colder than normal - the Champion GQ has greened up nicely and frankly my lawn is the best looking lawn on the block...It looks like AstroTurf - almost fake. I am thrilled with this seed! I do have some areas that suffered some winter kill but overall Champion GQ Perennial Rye Grass (PRG) performed and has met or exceeded my expectations. I live in Iowa so our weather is unpredictable - we get heat, freeze, rain, storms, wind, and huge temperature fluctuations through-out the year. I will do some over-seeding in the fall for the few areas that I need too but given that PRG is not a spreading type of grass I fully expected that and frankly some of the issues are washout where the seed just didn't quite get established in the fall and mostly all in the NE zone - we had multiple weeks of subzero ambient air temps this winter. The deep green color, ability to cut the grass at 2" or below, the striping, and the overall look of my lawn has far exceeded my expectations. When it is available I will buy another bag to overseed with this fall. This is a 2-3 year project for me to get my lawn perfect. I took a chance on PRG here in Central Iowa but Champion GQ and Hancock Seed Co has far exceeded my expectations and delivered all the way around. I will obviously be a repeat customer. Killing your existing lawn and installing a new lawn is extremely stressful and a lot of work...the last thing I wanted was to do all of that work and have the seed be a dud!!! Thank you Hancock!

Texas Overseeding Showstopper

Hands down, the best seed I've tested for winter overseeding in Texas. Pretty good germination rate (slightly below that of Annual Nu Spirit). Dethatching and utilizing NitroPhos Fall fertilizer worked well. Incredibly dark green color that fills in nicely. Once established, it has a moderate vertical growth rate, which reduces mowing significantly. Holds up better against pets and diseases once established. Very fine blades, feels like a carpet. Will continue to purchase this product from Hancock seed every fall as long as it is stocked. Quick shipping.
