Product Information

Blue Grama is a warm-season, perennial grass native to North America, particularly the Great Plains region.

Blue Grama grass forms dense, low-growing clumps with fine, narrow green foliage. In the late summer and fall, it produces distinctive seed heads with delicate, purplish-green flowers that resemble eyelashes or small flags.

Typically, this grass reaches heights of around 12 to 20 inches.

The seed heads of Blue Grama grass typically appear in late summer and persist into fall, adding texture and interest to the landscape.

Blue Grama is adaptable and thrives in various soil types, from sandy to clayey soils. It prefers full sun and is relatively drought-tolerant once established. It's well-suited for xeriscaping and natural landscapes.

Blue Grama is commonly used in native prairie and meadow restoration, erosion control, and landscaping in dry, sunny areas. It's also beneficial for wildlife, providing seeds for birds and serving as a habitat for various insects.

Once established, Blue Grama is relatively low-maintenance. It's drought-tolerant and doesn’t require much watering or fertilization. Trimming back the grass in late winter or early spring can help rejuvenate its appearance.

Blue Grama grass is valued for its tolerance to dry conditions, its attractive seed heads, and its role in natural landscapes, making it a favored choice for native plantings and areas where water conservation is essential.

Instructions

When choosing to start a new lawn, remove old vegetation by using a de-thatcher, power rake or tiller to kill the existing vegetation. Rake or drag the area to remove debris and dead grass for a clean area. Ensure the soil is leveled and loosened to allow the seed to have good soil contact once spread on a clean seed bed.

If you have an area with heavy weed coverage, we recommend starting fresh by killing and removing the existing vegetation. If you choose to use chemicals, herbicides or fertilizers, you must check with the product's manufacturer prior to planting new seed to ensure the proper waiting period.

When overseeding an existing area, mow your lawn at the lowest setting and bag the clippingsx. Rake or drag any areas that have dead thatch or debris.
