Hancock's Highlander Turf Bermuda Grass Seed - Hulled & Coated
Back

Hancock's Highlander Turf Bermuda is the best option for a successful Bermuda lawn or turf application, such as on golf courses, athletic fields, and public parks. Hancock Seed Company hand-selected the Highlander variety due to its breeding and optimal characteristics. Hancock's Highlander Bermuda grows rapidly and will thrive in hot weather or full sun.

Product Information

  • Application or Use: Lawn, Turf, Pasture, Livestock Grazing, Cattle Forage, Erosion Control, Cover Crop, Ground Cover
  • Germination Time: 5 - 12 days, under optimal conditions
  • Growing Locations: Warm Season & Transition Zone
  • Height: Lawn – 1 - 3 inches or Pasture – 8 - 12 inches
  • Sunlight Requirements: 8+ hours, full sun for best results
  • Advantages: Extreme drought and traffic tolerance with moderate tolerance to soils with poor nutrients.
  • When to Plant: Recommended planting time is spring and summer when nighttime temperatures are consistently 65+ degrees and 3 months prior to first frost.

This Bermuda is known to produce a lush, dense turf that will be less subject to weed issues and invasion. Highlander Bermuda is extremely drought tolerant and disease resistant, once established. This is a top choice for overseeding existing bermuda turf, or for starting an easy, cost-effective, and gorgeous bermuda lawn from scratch.

Bermuda grasses are the best and most popular form of turf to use for athletic facilities in the American South—from the humid climate of Florida across the Gulf of Mexico shore to Texas, and even farther out West—and other warm-weather climates. The reason for this is because of Bermuda's extreme resistance to wear and tear, as well as its ability to bounce back from damage done by athletic shoes and heavy foot traffic. One issue in using Bermuda for turf is that high-quality varieties have only been available as plugs or other forms needing establishment. Hancock's Highlander Bermuda is at the top of a list of cultivars that are available for most budget-conscious establishment via seed, and not through plugs.

Hancock's Highlander Bermuda is such a fine variety that it is also known for being a quality choice for pasture applications. Hancock's Highlander even outperformed many other seeded bermudas during forage trials in both Texas and Arizona. It can withstand heavy grazing and is extremely high yielding.

Hancock's Highlander Turf Bermuda is hulled and coated.

Coated Seed vs Raw Seed

Coated seed contains a clay-based surrounding shell that increases moisture retention and helps to reduce insect or fowl consumption. Coated seed contains approximately 50% coating weight, or inert weight, per pound of seed. Coated Hancock's Highlander Turf Bermuda is also easier to see after it is applied. Raw seed features no fillers, coatings, or treatments.

Rave Reviews

It's no secret why Hancock's Highlander Turf Bermuda Seed is so popular. The answer is "because it works"! Here are a few of our favorite reviews from clients who have planted Hancock's Highlander Turf Bermuda Seed:

"I received my seed in less than a week," writes Jason S. "I seeded my front yard the last week of May during a 2 week drought with highs in the upper 90s every day. I watered every evening with sprinklers covering as much of my yard as possible. The Highlander emerged in 5 days and has not slowed down since. Great germination where I was able to keep moist and the seed outside of my irrigation reach waited for rain which finally came the first week of June. I have very sandy soil in northeast North Carolina and would highly recommend this seed."

"Hancock Seed consistently provides excellent product," says Murray R. "I moved back to my home in Deep South Alabama in 2016. I had moved away in 2009 and the house was a rental until June 2017. Needless to say, the grass was in sad, sad shape...I had good results in 2017, and again over seeded with the same product in 2018. This year has beyond my expectations. Areas that were barren and I thought would take even longer to get back, were lush and green. We had a drought this past August/September, and the yard had held up. I would recommend Hancock Seed to everyone."

"WOW....Put this seed out not knowing we were expecting record breaking temperatures here in South Carolina," writes Ed B. "Spread seed on Sunday evening temps were 100+ for four days and by Thursday grass was popping up!! I did have to water 3 times a day! About ready to order another 100 lbs. 'Tickled.'"

"We dragged about half an acre in our front yard with a dethatcher (criss cross pattern), used a Scotts rotary spreader set on the lowest setting (2) to put the seed out, then dragged a section of fence with a garden tractor," says Sean R. "We watered 30 minutes twice a day the first three days, but noticed the soil getting dry in the middle of the day (90 degree days). This area gets full sun, so we added a third watering in the middle of the day (2pm), even though we figured it would evaporate. Low and behold, here we are on the evening of day 5 and we have 1/4 inch tall grass seed germination!...It's off to a great start."

Remove all old vegetation to prepare a clean seedbed by means of a rake. Drag or rake the area to both loosen and level any hard or uneven spots if needed. Apply a slow-release starter fertilizer at the recommended rate of 5 lbs. Per 1,000 sq. ft. for lawns. Fertilize your lawn three times a year for best results.

Broadcast seed at recommended rate. Drag, rake or roll lightly to cover the seed, no more than 1/8 in. below surface. If you are overseeding an existing lawn or pasture, it is essential to mow existing grass low and incorporate seed 1/8 in. into the soil for best results. Apply lawn irrigation for approximately 30 minutes every evening until soil is damp, and germination has occurred. Irrigate newly-seeded lawns every other day until the grass reaches 6 in., then water recommended 3 times a week, if needed.

Great seeds.!!!

The seeds germinate fast and create a thick luscious green carpet of Bermuda quickly. I would recommend Hancock seeds to anybody looking for quality safe non-GMO seeds…

50% of my yard came up. Some didn't.

All was put in the same, Same fertilizer, same 1/2 inch coverage, new sandy loam soil. Watered 3 times a day. Bought a 10lb bag the first time and then a 2 lb bag. Good shipping time. I just thought hulled coated seed would germinate better.

Poor Quality Seed

I've purchased seed from this company several times and didn't have a problem with the seed in the past. This time round purchased a 5 lb. bag and followed all the right steps as usual and the results were 10% or less germination. Contaced Hancock letting them they I received a bad batch of seed.Ed responded requesting I fill out a form about the specifics on how I seeded, when, and what I used. Filled it out and sent it back in. Received an email back from Ed stating the seed was tested prior to in June 2024 and had a 87% germ rate, but that doesn't mean I received a quality batch from that group of seed. It is highly possible to still recieve a bad batch. Then also said it could have been the weather and only offered a 10% discount on the next purchase when I requested either a refund or just to send out a new batch of seed which would have been the honorable thing to do. Again I've had good results in the past but not this go round.
