Hancock's Micro Clover Seed
Back

Micro Clover Seed has all the same characteristics of regular clover, with the exception of the leaf size. Micro Clover can be planted as a standalone lawn, or overseeded into existing lawn grasses. It can tolerate wet (not to be flooded for long periods of time) and shade conditions, as well as drought. Micro clover is a nitrogen-fixing legume that requires little fertilizer, fungicides, pesticides, or mowing. According to Penn State University, the estimated range for a potential fertilizer reduction of 1 to 2 pounds of nitrogen annually per 1000 square feet of application. Micro clover also benefits your existing lawn grasses by providing natural nutrients. Micro clover has excellent cold, drought and traffic tolerance. The turf is very dense, very lush, and very beautiful.

Many enjoy Hancock's Micro Clover as an option for alternative lawns because it has a dark shade of green that is comparable to those found in more traditional lawns. Micro Clover is a variant/selection of common White Clover that has been cultivated to supply a less problematic partnership with traditional lawn grasses. Common White Clover was once a more popular lawn option, however it frequently formed clumps and in turn created troubles for those emphasizing lawn grasses. This, and the advancement of herbicides that would kill off standard White Clover, led to the development of Micro Clover, which grows lower and mixes better with lawn grass accordingly. Although it does flower, Hancock's Micro Clover does not create nearly as many blooms as traditional White Clover.

Micro Clover is extremely cold tolerant. It will go dormant slightly in the winter months, depending on location but is very aggressive and will most likely come back under harsh winter conditions. Killing frost or ice may be the exception. Micro Clover, in light dormancy, will slow down and lose some vigor causing the color to dull but not completely go away.

If Micro Clover is not cut, then the leaf size increases, the more it is cut then the smaller the leaf size. When Micro Clover is not mowed at all, the leaf size will be about 1/2 the size of White Dutch Clover. When it is mowed, new leaf heads form within a few days so it continually looks thick and lush. If it isn't mowed, it will get approximately 6 inches tall. If you mow it, it will want to quit growing just slightly taller than the height it was mowed at. For example, if you mow it at a height of 3 inches, it will head back out and quit growing at a height of approximately 4 inches. In other words, you can almost "train" its growing height with infrequent mowings.

Microclover could present with larger leaves due to lack of density. In the springtime, especially in the first year, the clover can present with larger leaves as it attempts to reproduce as well. If you have areas with larger leaves, we recommend adding more seed to the thin areas to increase the density, then try to keep it between 1 and 4 inches in height. This should greatly improve the size of the leaves by not only adding more plants, but continuing to mow it low to encourage it to spread out which will also boost density. By doing this, the leaves should be smaller as they expect it look.

Micro clover is a coated seed. It is non-GMO.

Coated Seed vs Raw Seed

Coated seed contains a clay-based surrounding shell that increases moisture retention and helps to reduce insect or fowl consumption. Coated seed contains approximately 50% coating weight, or inert weight, per pound of seed. Coated Hancock's Micro Clover Seed is also easier to see after it is applied. Raw seed features no fillers, coatings, or treatments.

Rave Reviews

It's no secret why Hancock's Micro Clover Seed is so popular. The answer is "because it works"! Here are a few of our favorite reviews from clients who have planted Hancock's Micro Clover Seed:

"After considerable chinchbug damage to my lawn and no special fondness for grass, I decided to try a pound of your micro clover this spring, and after about a month the dead patches had been replaced with a beautiful carpet of clover," says Earl R. "I recently purchased another pound for the remainder of the lawn. Thanks!"

"This is the second time I ordered Micro Clover Seed from Hancock and again the results are excellent!" writes Rich B. "This was a more challenging seeding with very high central NC temps in late-June/early-July, but after seeding per instructions and watering well twice a day for the first two weeks, the clover has germinated and is doing well. All the steep slopes planted have new clover which survived the hard 1" rain that broke the heat pattern."

The first rule in mixing Micro Clover in with other grass species is to know that Micro Clover grows quite aggressively and is well suited to the latest fine-leaved, dense, high-quality perennial Ryegrass. Strong, creeping types of Red Fescue are strong enough to be used in mixtures with both perennial Ryegrass and Micro clover. Slender creeping Red Fescue and Chewings Fescue are used more in mixtures without perennial Ryegrass where they find equilibrium with the Micro clover. In dry areas, Micro clover can be added to Tall Fescue grass mixtures.

This is larger than the clover that grows in my lawn

I purchased this clover early in 2019. It germinated very well. I had direct seeded it, winter sowed some in containers and also did a tray started inside so I can put plugs in the lawn. The issue is this clover is bigger than the clover that grows in my lawn and other lawns around. It’s leaves are larger. It’s also not as nice a color as the other clover. It’s leaves fold a little bit when stressed. I contacted the company in early June 2019 and they assured me they sent the correct clover and that it needs to be mowed to remain micro. My lawn gets mowed every week. I’ve been watching this clover to see if it improved over the year and I still feel very disappointed in this product because of the size, growth habit and color.

Hancock Seed

Micro Clover needs to be seeded thick and mowed regularly for the first year to two years in order to remain "micro". If it is not seeded heavily enough, it will grow taller and be bigger in size. We apologize for the inconvenience. Thank you for choosing Hancock Seed. We hope to have your business in the future.

Great Company

Have purchased micro clover from Hancock Seed before and had very good results. With this order of micro clover I pre-order it. A few weeks later I got an email staying that they would be refunding my money because the samples didn't pass the germination tests. What great company!! I just placed an order for fescue and will purchase micro clover whenever it's available.

Hancock seeds have high standards

I have ordered from Hancock multiple times. Their MicroClover is truly, the only “short” clover on the market. They are sold out of “Micro” for now because the seed in stock failed to meet their standards for germination. Frankly, I would buy these seeds anyway. I really need to seed over some enormous clover claiming to be “mini” but which is, in fact, huge.

Micro seed is off to

Micro seed is off to a great start. I planted on a Friday and the following Monday seed started to germinate. Very pleased with seed purchase. Today has been 7 full days and there is micro clover everywhere. I planted.
