How Do You Apply a Seed Inoculant?

If your seed is not already pre-inoculated, follow the proper steps to ensure the inoculant is applied correctly. Because inoculants contain living bacteria, proper handling and application are important for success.

1.      Choose the correct inoculant. Select an inoculant specifically designed for the legume you are planting. Different legumes require different strains of beneficial bacteria, and inoculants have a limited shelf life, so always check the expiration date before use.

2.      Protect the inoculant from heat and sunlight. Exposure to high temperatures and direct sunlight can damage the bacteria. Store inoculant according to the product instructions and avoid leaving it in hot areas, such as the dashboard of a vehicle.

3.      Prepare the inoculant mixture. Many inoculants come in a peat-based medium and should be mixed with a small amount of water to create a slurry. A sticking agent can be used to help the inoculant adhere to the seed.
