Showy Partridge Peas are an annual, erect legume that can reach heights of 1-3 feet. The plant features yellow flowers and the leaves are in 10-16 pairs of small, narrow leaflets. The yellow flowers are approximately one inch across and can grow in clusters of 2-4 flowers. The flowers on the Showy Partridge Peas typically bloom between July and September. This plant can be a re-seeding annual, if it is allowed to re-seed.
The Showy Partridge Peas grow in a wide range of soils which range from slightly acidic to moderately alkaline. It grows best on moderately limed, well-drained soils. This seed is distributed throughout the Midwest, Eastern and Southern US. The Showy Partridge Peas grow best in full sun but can survive under lightly shady areas as well. This plant has low water requirements – it can grow and produce seed under stressed conditions.
Mildew and leaf spot may appear. Although partridge pea foliage is nutritious, it can be poisonous and should be considered potentially dangerous to cattle.
