I just wanted to send you some pictures to show you how well the grass seed we bought from Hancock Seed in mid June 2008 worked for us. We had our soil tested, then limed it as per the recommendations and tilled in the lime and turned under the weeds with a disc. Our pastures have not had grass in them for years but were only covered with inedible weeds and sand. We finally decided it was time to change that but after we tilled everything under I was looking at the bare dirt filled pastures thinking, "What have I done?". I thought it would be a year or more before they would be fully covered with grass because there was so much bare acreage to cover. We ran a drag across the pastures and then put down 250 pounds of 16-4-8 fertilizer per acre along with 100 pounds of Argentine Bahia/Millet Mix per acre. We completed our first pasture on July 4th, 2008 and the other 4 pastures were also seeded within a few days of that time as well. Then we waited and luckily because it was the rainy season the weather cooperated and the grass began to grow (and grow and grow and grow). My mom says when it rains she can practically hear the grass growing... LOL.
The attached pictures show our pastures on August 3rd, 2008, just a month after planting the seed. We are sooooooo thrilled with the results that we wanted to send you the pictures to show you what we have. Pastures LOADED with grass. The Millet is what you can see in the pictures (and it's too tall in a couple because the mower was overworked and had to be taken to the shop for a few days) but the bahia is coming up really well also.
Thank you!!! I never thought I would get so excited to see grass grow... LOL. But we raise miniature horses and have had problems the last couple of years with sand colic in the horses due to our weed covered sand lots which is what our pastures were before we re-seeded them. We kept the horses off the pastures for the first 3 weeks and now let them back on for an hour or so and rotate the pastures as we should have been doing all along.
I would recommend this process of reseeding to anyone and would recommend your seed and fertilizer products.
P.S - Please check our website to see our World Champion Miniature Appaloosas that are happily eating the grass in the pastures thanks to you guys... :-)
