I purchased this argentine Bahia and a bag of 16-4-08
fertilizer early spring. I started with a lawn that was about 75% weeds. In
addition to the weed filled lawn I was also redoing a large section of
landscaping. After doing the landscaping I was left with a lawn that was
very undesirable. After doing lots of research into various grass types I
settled on the argentine Bahia. I know it isn't the best grass but because
of the size of the lawn and the cost of st Augustine sod I decided to try
the Argentina Bahia seed first. It's relatively cheap compared to sod and
much less labor intensive. I live about 30 mins from the Hancock store in
dade city so I drove their to purchase the items. The next day I leveled the
lawn with a basic cheap fill dirt of clay/sand. Next I laid the fertilizer
with a broadcast spreader followed by the seed.
Just as a note I did not follow the planting instructions from the company.
They suggest laying the seed then lightly raking to cover the seed. What I
did instead was leave the seed on top then come back about 1-1.5 weeks later
and LIGHTLY top dross with a good top soil. Within another week I had little
seedlings popping through all over! I'm really impressed with the
germination rate I'm getting although I did lay the seed a good bit heavier
I should also mention that I did deathatch my lawn with a power rake prior
to laying the new seed as well. Even the grass that was left is much greener
and thicker than before hand. On top of that I completely redid my sprinkler
system for the section of lawn I reseeded which is about 2500 square feet.
Without the irrigation system I don't think the seed would have germinated
because it has been pretty dry so far and the areas where I don't have head
to head coverage don't have impressive germination rates.
Appearance: this argentine Bahia has a nice width to the blade and great
color. Nice and dark. There's a marked difference between my grass and one
of the neighbors whose grass is a mix of weeds, mostly crab grass and sand
Spurs, and what I believe to be Pensacola Bahia.
The only regret I have is not killing the whole lawn and starting fresh. If
I had known it was this simple and easy I would have.
Overall I'd say this has been a great product. If I wasn't going to lay sod next year I would not hesitate to shop here again for this same exact product. 5 star company and a 5 star product.
