Product Information
Fall Dormancy is the ability of alfalfa to grow in the fall. The taller the alfalfa grows in the fall, the less dormant it is. Dormancy is ranked on a scale of 1 to 11, with 1 being the most dormant and 11 being the least dormant. The Alamo Alfalfa blend has a dormancy rating of 11, which means that this mixture will grow taller in the fall compared other varieties. When seeding this blend, you will want to start with a smooth seedbed that is free of weeds. The seeds will also need adequate moisture for germination and emergence. In general, graze or cut for hay when alfalfa is in early bloom and cut to about a 2-inch height. Successive grazings and cuttings for hay should occur at 1/4 bloom stage or after a 5-6- week recovery period. Alfalfa can better withstand grazing if rotational grazing is used. Alfalfa may cause livestock to blend and care should be used in managing such grazing to reduce the possibility of this hazard.
